‘Stromsinfonie’ is a fugue-like composition for field recordings: drones from hydroelectric power stations on the River Ill meet the noise of water movements in connection with the power station processes. The different humming and roaring textures recorded at the Rodundwerk and the Klarenbrunn and Hochwuhr power stations enter into a dialogue with the gurgling, gushing, foaming and roaring at the Illspitz and the Milchhofbrücke and combine to form a dynamic musical structure. The composition utilises the rhythmic and tonal qualities of these field recordings to create a structured yet organic soundscape. The repetitive and pulsating sounds of the power stations are interwoven with the flowing and bubbling movements of the water through variations in tempo, dynamics and timbre to create a complex and constantly changing soundscape. The opposing voices in the composition each dominate one of the speakers. The composition tells of the power and dynamics of water and is at the same time a reflection on the relationship between humans and the environment, an artistic exploration of the river hybrid Ill.
