MENDEL revisited

intervention in public space/lecture performance/2022
performance: Beatrice Kretzer, Angela Wiedermann; soundscape: Evamaria Müller

MENDEL revisited was an intervention performed at the Mendel Monument Vienna on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Gregor Mendel's birth as part of the Mendel Walk 2022. The intervention hews in the central column of the monument and adds two more panels to the memorial plaque for Gregor Mendel located on the monument: One commemorates the research work of the first female geneticists, whose merits were systematically ignored by the research establishment or illegally appropriated by male colleagues. The second panel urges ethical responsibility in the application of genetic engineering techniques. In the lecture performance, the enclosure becomes a triptych-like stage, which, depending on the position of the walls, places one of the three memorial plaques in the center and forms the background for one of three associated performances. The performances are supported by a soundscape by Evamaria Müller, which the artist generated from field recordings from the phenotyping laboratory and the computer center of the research cluster Biocenter Vienna.
